Which is better as pets – cats or dogs?

Since dawn of time mankind has to deal with several questions that probably never ever will be answered satisfyingly: Is there life after death? What is the answer to life, the universe and everything? Did chicken precede the egg? Everything comes down to one question: cats or dogs. For me this decision would not be hard – I know intuitively that I am a dog-person. This intuition will be backed up by this essay. Admittedly I have to make one exception: My dog has to be of the size of a shepherd at the minimum. Those tiny lap dogs Paris Hilton is carrying around in her hand bag do not deserve the name dog, in my eyes. The following essay proofs that dogs are better than cats, and focuses on the aspect of having them as pets.

Cats and dogs are domestic animals that accompany man for different reasons and different spans of time. The history of man's story with cats starts 9.500 years ago (tinyurl.com/oldestpetcat) whereas dogs have a much older history: They escort man for 15.000 years. (tinyurl.com/domesticdog) Cats were worshiped as idols in ancient egypt. In the dark ages they became companions of witches and are superstitiously associated with misfortune until nowadays. Dogs on the other hand have always been helpful animals. They are kept as sheepdogs and guard dogs for aeons. They are used as sled dogs for 12,000 years. The multiple aplicability of dogs lead into a use as hunting dogs, avalanche dogs, search and rescue dogs, police dogs, seeing-eye dogs, even lifeguards! In general, dogs are more helpful to mankind and society than cats are.

The initial question of this essay – cats or dogs – is an analogy to the eternal struggle of good vs. evil, black vs. white, of man vs. woman. In German a dog is referred to with a masculine pronoun (der Hund) whereas a cat shows a feminine pronoun (die Katze). In general a dog is associated more masculine and cats show features of feminity, e.g. they are moodily. After all, don’t we stereotype women as cat people and men as dog people? (tinyurl.com/catsordogs) A friend of mine bought a cat for 600 bucks because his wife wanted him to. Now he is divorced. Poor guy. Poor cat. Which animal actually is better depends on the point of view. The following discusses the suitability of cats and dogs as pets

Dogs are social animals. Like their wolf ancestors dogs are pack animals with a complex set of behaviors related to determining each dog's position in the social hierarchy. These sophisticated forms of social behavior and communication may account for their trainability, playfulness, and ability to fit into human households and social situations. These attributes have earned dogs a unique relationship with humans. Why this relationship is not only unique but important I will show in the next paragraph.

Although one may like the low-maintenance aspect of cats – they come and go when they want to. Dogs are different. They deserve attention. They have to be educated (in difference to cats they can be educated!). Keeping and living with a dog is a challenge and hard work. But it is rewarded with lifelong loyalty no other pet can grant.

eine recht aufschlussreiche Abhandlung und für mein Dafürhalten sprachlich wirklich gelungen.
Zwei winzige Kleinigkeiten sind mir aufgefallen: Im ersten Absatz bei "…My dog has to be of the size of a shepherd at the minimum…"
Müsste es da nicht korrekt "of a shepherd dog" heißen?
"Applicabilty" wird mit Doppel-p geschrieben, sicher nur ein Flüchtigkeitsfehler.
Und was die Beantwortung der Frage angeht, eindeutig Hunde.
Katzen sind recht eigenwillige Geschöpfe, die mitunter zwar niedlich aussehen, denen man aber absolut nichts beibringen kann.

Zu dem Obigen: Statt "of the size" einfach "the size of a German shepherd", also auch ohne "dog".

Möchtest du trotzdem noch wissen, welche Verbesserungsvorschläge ich gemacht hätte? Tut mir leid, dass ich gestern anderweitig beansprucht war.

relationship ( to avoid "history, story" )

they are moody ( no adverb )

dollars ( "bucks" is too informal for this context )

animal is actually better

depends on one's point of view

ancestors,

behaviors,

that help determine ( better )

important,

Nonetheless ( adverb; "although" is a conjunction introducing a secondary clause )

as opposed to
