Eine kleine Ortschaft wird beschrieben, mit:

Shingle = grober Kies oder, wenn es Dächer sind, Schindeldächer. OK!
Aber was darf ich mir unter "clapboard" vorstellen?

Hi Lykos,

"Clapboard", usually pronounced "clabbud", is the traditional siding -- Verkleidung --of older homes in the USA. It consists of overlapping narrow boards, nailed on horizontally. The upper side of each board is thinner and is covered up by the next board, with the thicker side exposed. "Shingles" are "Dachschindeln", which were originally made of wood, later replaced by "asphalt shingles".
"Will o' the wisps" are "Irrlichter".

Als ich "clapboard" zum ersten Mal las, dachte ich spontan an ein Kaff, wo nicht viel los ist und man bei uns dazu sagt, dass am Abend die Bürgersteige hochgeklappt werden.

Clapboard, also known as bevel siding or lap siding or weather-board (with regional variants as to the exact definitions of these terms), is a board used typically for exterior horizontal siding that has one edge thicker than the other and where the board above laps over the one below. It is often found in New England architecture.

Clapboard siding got its name from the Dutch Klappen, meaning to split. It was originally split by hand from logs in a radial manner. Later, the boards were radially sawn in a mill.
